Jess and Nick are back together but they are keeping their romance a secret from their roommates. In season 5 episode 16, 'Helmet', Jess tries to navigate this new territory by keeping her and Nick's relationship under wraps while also dealing with a work crisis.
Jess's boss, Joan, wants her to make a presentation but Jess is struggling to come up with an idea. To make matters worse, Joan also assigns Jess a new coworker, who happens to be very attractive. Jess is constantly distracted by her crush on the new coworker and her secret relationship with Nick.
Meanwhile, Nick is trying to avoid talking about his feelings with Winston. Winston has been going through a tough break up and is looking for someone to confide in. Nick is hesitant to talk about his relationship with Jess because he doesn't want to jinx it.
Schmidt and Cece are dealing with their own issues in 'Helmet'. Schmidt is still working at the ad agency and is trying to balance his job with his role as a new husband. Cece is frustrated with Schmidt's lack of consideration for her feelings and is trying to come up with a plan to get him to be more attentive.
As Jess tries to come up with a winning presentation for Joan, she turns to her roommates for help. The gang tries to brainstorm ideas for Jess but they are all terrible. Jess begins to panic as the presentation deadline approaches and her feelings for her coworker become more intense.
At the same time, Nick and Winston are in a heated debate about bike helmets. Nick is convinced that bike helmets are unnecessary but Winston thinks they are essential. Their argument becomes a bigger issue when Schmidt and Cece become involved.
In the end, Jess is forced to confront her true feelings for her coworker. She also has to face the fact that keeping her relationship with Nick a secret is causing her more stress than it's worth. Nick and Winston come to a compromise about bike helmets and Schmidt and Cece work on finding a way to balance their relationship with Schmidt's job.
