New Girl season 5 episode 1, titled "Big Mama P," picks up where the previous season left off. The episode begins with Nick and Jess discussing the kiss they shared in the previous season. It's clear that both of them are still conflicted about their feelings, and they decide to keep their relationship casual for the time being. Meanwhile, Schmidt is still engaged to Cece but is having second thoughts about the marriage. He confides in Winston, who encourages him to talk to Cece and figure out his true feelings.
As the gang prepares for a day at the beach, Jess receives a phone call from her ex-boyfriend, Spencer. She's hesitant to talk to him at first, but ultimately decides to meet up with him. While at the beach, Nick tries to distract himself from his feelings for Jess by flirting with her friend, Reagan. The two hit it off, but Nick is hesitant to pursue anything serious.
Back at the loft, Schmidt tries to talk to Cece about his feelings, but she's distracted by a new job offer. She's been approached by a modeling agency to do plus-size modeling, and she's excited about the opportunity. However, Schmidt worries that the job will cause her to gain weight and jeopardize their upcoming wedding.
Meanwhile, Jess meets up with Spencer and discovers that he's moved on from their relationship and is seeing someone else. She's initially upset, but ultimately decides to let go of her feelings for him and move on with her life. When she returns to the beach, she finds Nick and Reagan making out and realizes that she's still not over Nick.
As the episode comes to a close, Schmidt finally works up the courage to tell Cece how he feels. He admits that he's hesitant about the wedding and needs more time to figure things out. Cece is initially upset, but ultimately agrees to postpone the wedding and give Schmidt the space he needs to sort out his feelings.
Overall, "Big Mama P" is a solid season opener that sets the stage for the rest of the season. It's clear that the characters are still dealing with the aftermath of the previous season's events, and there are plenty of unresolved feelings and conflicts to explore. With its trademark blend of humor and heart, New Girl continues to be one of the most beloved sitcoms on television.
