In the second episode of season 4 of New Girl, titled "Dice," the loftmates continue to navigate their new living situation with Schmidt's recently acquired spot back in the apartment. Meanwhile, Winston tries to bond with his new partner on the force, Aly, and Nick struggles to adapt to his new job at the bar.
As the episode begins, the group is excited to have Schmidt back in the loft, but tensions quickly rise when they discover that he has taken over the bathroom. Cece is especially frustrated with Schmidt's lack of consideration, and she begins to worry that they may not be compatible as a couple. Meanwhile, Winston is excited to have a new partner on the force, but he struggles to connect with her when she seems more interested in playing a dice game with the guys than doing actual police work.
Nick, who has recently started working at a local bar, is having a difficult time adjusting to his new role as a bartender. He is constantly making mistakes and getting into arguments with the patrons, and Schmidt's advice only seems to make things worse. At one point, Nick even gets kicked out of the bar by his boss, leaving him feeling completely demoralized.
Throughout the episode, the characters grapple with their own insecurities and vulnerabilities. Jess spends much of her time trying to mediate the conflicts between her roommates, but she also struggles with her own feelings of inadequacy when she realizes that her friends don't think she has what it takes to be a tough negotiator. Meanwhile, Coach is dealing with his own insecurities about his masculinity, and he turns to Winston for help in proving himself to a new girlfriend.
Ultimately, all of the characters are forced to confront their own weaknesses and learn how to support each other through their struggles. Through the game of dice, Winston is able to connect with Aly and become a better partner, and Nick finds the strength to stand up to his boss and take control of his job. Cece and Schmidt come to a better understanding of each other, and Jess learns that she doesn't have to be tough to be a good leader.
Overall, "Dice" is a fun and heartwarming episode that showcases the unique dynamics of the New Girl characters and their ability to come together and support each other through their ups and downs.
