In this episode of New England Legends, we explore the darker side of Christmas with tales of hauntings and strange happenings. Host Jeff Belanger takes us on a journey through the region, from the historic streets of Salem to the snowy mountains of Vermont.
The first story we hear is of a haunted inn in Rhode Island. Guests have reported seeing an apparition of a young girl, who they believe died in the building many years ago. But it's not just the ghostly sightings that have people spooked; strange noises, furniture moving on its own, and other unexplained occurrences have been reported by guests staying at the inn.
Next, we travel to Salem, Massachusetts, where a historic mansion known as the "Witch House" takes center stage. The Witch House is believed to be haunted by the spirits of those accused of witchcraft during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Visions of a ghostly woman in period clothing have been reported, as well as other eerie encounters.
Moving on to New Hampshire, we hear the story of a family who moved into a historic home and began experiencing strange occurrences. Lights turning on and off, disembodied voices, and objects moving on their own were just the beginning. They soon learned that the house had a dark history, and that the previous owner had died under mysterious circumstances.
In Vermont, we visit a popular ski resort where a ghostly presence has been reported many times. The story goes that a young skier fell to his death from the chairlift years ago and his ghost still haunts the area. Some skiers have reported feeling a presence behind them, and others have seen the apparition of the young man darting between trees.
Finally, we hear the story of a man in Maine who claims to have experienced some truly bizarre events during the holiday season. Every year, the man sets up a fake Christmas tree in his living room, but every year the tree is mysteriously moved to a different location in the house. Though he initially thought it was a prank played by his family members, he soon realized that no one was moving the tree - it was happening all on its own.
Throughout this episode, Jeff Belanger provides historical and cultural context to help viewers understand the origins of these strange and spooky stories. With beautiful cinematography and expert storytelling, Creepy Christmas is a fascinating exploration of the haunted and mysterious side of the holiday season in New England.
