As Naruto's training continues, he is given a new mission to pursue. Along with Sakura, they are assigned to form a new ninja team of their own. The episode titled "A New Squad! Two People and a Dog?!" begins with Naruto and Sakura having a heated debate regarding who they would want to join them on their mission. Sakura suggests the former members of her own team, Shino, and Kiba, to which Naruto objects and suggests they include someone from his team, such as Choji, Shikamaru, or Ino.
In the end, they are able to come to an agreement, and form a new squad consisting of Naruto, Sakura, and the dog, Pakkun, whom they have met while working for Kakashi. Though the members of the new team are initially reluctant to work together, they soon realize that they can accomplish great things if they combine their strengths.
The first task assigned to them is to locate a hidden scroll in the dense forest of the Land of Waves. The scroll contains information about a powerful and dangerous jutsu, which if used by the wrong person, could cause severe destruction. The team soon finds themselves battling enemies that include members of the rival ninja village, Sound. They also come across a hidden underground lab, where they learn about forbidden jutsu experiments being conducted on animals.
In the midst of their mission, the team learns to trust and rely on each other's strengths. Naruto's determination and quick thinking, combined with Sakura's healing abilities and Pakkun's tracking skills, prove to be a winning combination. They are, however, faced with a difficult decision when they come across a member of the Sound village who is a scientist conducting dangerous jutsu experiments on animals, including a three-headed wolf-like creature created through his experiments.
