In Episode 26 of MythBusters' sixth season, hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman launch into a series of experiments to test three myths.
First up is the myth that a ping pong ball can be made to levitate using only a hair dryer. To test this, Adam and Jamie construct a wind tunnel and use it to blow air at increasing speeds towards a table tennis ball. While at first, the ball moves around frenetically, as the speed of the air is increased to over 100 miles per hour, the ball manages to maintain its position in the air. Adam and Jamie conclude that the myth is plausible, though it would require very precise conditions and skills to execute.
Next, the MythBusters turn their attention to a tale about a man who managed to shoot a bullet through a rifle barrel and into the barrel of another rifle, using only a mirror angled behind the first barrel. Adam and Jamie investigate whether this could really be done, and quickly realize that it would require a high degree of accuracy, luck, and the right conditions, such as having the barrels positioned in a perfectly straight line. They decide to build a rig that will allow them to test the myth in a more controlled setting. After numerous attempts, Adam is able to shoot a round through the first barrel and bounce it off a mirror, where the bullet is then caught by a second barrel. The Myth is confirmed as plausible, though highly unlikely to achieve in real-world conditions.
Lastly, the MythBusters examine the belief that it's possible to launch a water heater hundreds of feet into the air by packing it full of explosives and igniting them. Adam and Jamie construct a water heater filled with roughly 10 pounds of high explosives and position it in an open field. After several tests to gauge the force and blast radius of the explosives, they ignite the device and are stunned as the water heater is launched about 500 feet into the air. The Myth is confirmed as plausible, though Adam and Jamie note that this is incredibly dangerous and should not be attempted under any circumstances.
Throughout Episode 26, Adam and Jamie use their keen sense of ingenuity, problem-solving, and passion for experimentation - all hallmarks of the MythBusters brand. Fans of the show will no doubt appreciate the elaborate setups, precision engineering, and plenty of explosions and high-speed footage. As with all episodes of MythBusters, viewers are encouraged to keep up an open mind and enjoy the playful and curious spirit that has defined the show for so many years.
