In the 20th episode of the 5th season of Mythbusters, the team takes on the common household appliance, the water heater. The episode is aptly named "Exploding Water Heater," and the team sets out to test just how dangerous a water heater can be if it malfunctions.
First, they set up a small-scale experiment to test whether or not a water heater can actually explode. They fill a water heater with water and then gradually turn up the heat until it eventually ruptures. The result is an impressive explosion that sends shrapnel and boiling water flying.
Next, the team investigates whether or not gas leaks in a water heater can lead to an explosion. They rig up a water heater with a gas leak and attempt to ignite it. Sure enough, the heater explodes in a dramatic fashion.
Moving on to electricity, Adam and Jamie set out to test whether or not an electric water heater can be dangerous if it's not properly grounded. They rig up a water heater outside and connect it to a power source. They then intentionally disable the grounding wire and attempt to turn it on. The result is a huge electrical arc that prompts Adam to exclaim, "Oh my God, that's terrifying!"
Finally, the team tests whether or not a water heater can become a rocket if the pressure relief valve fails. They set up a water heater on a launching platform and fill it with water. As it heats up, the pressure builds and eventually the relief valve fails, causing the water heater to blast off like a rocket.
Throughout the episode, the team discusses the importance of maintaining and properly installing water heaters to avoid dangerous situations. The episode is an exciting and informative look at the potential dangers of everyday household appliances.
