In the second episode of MythBusters season 12, titled "Fire vs Ice," the legendary team of Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman set out to determine which is hotter - fire or ice.
To begin, the duo aimed to test the capabilities of liquid nitrogen and its potential to extinguish a fire. They began by creating a small blaze using a can of flammable spray and tried to extinguish it using liquid nitrogen. However, to their surprise, the flames were only temporarily put out and reignited after a few moments. The team then took to the lab to test whether liquid nitrogen could effectively smother a flame in an enclosed space.
Next, Adam and Jamie wanted to test whether ice could be used to combat fire. They began by creating an ice pack from dry ice and vodka, which they hoped could extinguish small flames. Despite initial success in putting out a small flame, they quickly realized that this approach would not be practical for larger fires.
The team also tested the idea that fire could be used to melt ice. They set up a scenario where a house was on fire and there was a large block of ice inside that could potentially put out the fire. However, the experiment showed that the fire was simply too hot and too intense for the ice to have any effect.
Throughout the episode, Adam and Jamie conducted various other tests and experiments to determine the capabilities of fire and ice. They also showcased a number of notable examples from history where both elements have played a major role in shaping the world we live in.
As always, the MythBusters team brought their signature style, humor, and scientific approach to this exciting episode. They explored the limits of fire and ice, delving deep into the science behind these incredibly powerful forces of nature, and helping viewers better understand the world around them.
