In season 11, episode 9 of MythBusters, titled "Location, Location, Location," hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman investigate myths related to geography and location.
The first myth they explore is whether or not a person can dodge a bullet by quickly moving out of the way. To test this, they set up a high-speed camera and shoot bullets at a mannequin while Jamie attempts to dodge the bullets. They also consult with a ballistics expert to understand the physics behind the bullet's trajectory and velocity.
Next, they tackle the myth that a person can survive jumping off a building by landing in a dumpster filled with trash. Adam and Jamie build a set of varying heights and test the myth with dummies. They also speak with a trauma surgeon to understand the likelihood of survival from such a fall and whether or not landing in a dumpster would make a difference.
The third myth they investigate is whether or not a person can outrun a lava flow. To test this, they build a miniature model of a volcano and simulate lava by using molten aluminum. They use a stopwatch to time how fast the lava travels and then run alongside it to see if a person could outrun it. They also speak with a volcanologist to understand the behavior and speed of real lava flows.
Lastly, Adam and Jamie explore whether or not a person can safely jump from a speeding car before it goes off a cliff. They build a ramp and launch a car off of it while a stuntman attempts to jump out of the car before it reaches the cliff. They also speak with a stunt coordinator to learn about proper stunt practices and analyze how much time a person would have to jump out of a car traveling at high speeds.
Throughout the episode, Adam and Jamie use their signature combination of science, trial and error, and expert consultation to evaluate the validity of each myth. They also provide insight into the underlying principles and physics involved in each experiment, making the episode not just entertaining but also informative.
