In season 10 episode 6 of MythBusters, titled "Blow Your Own Sail," the team takes on the challenge of testing whether or not a person can generate enough wind to propel a sailboat by blowing into a sail.
The episode begins with the MythBusters crew building a small sailboat and rigging it with a sail. They then set up a makeshift wind tunnel in order to measure the speed and force of wind generated by a human's breath. After some initial testing, they conclude that it would be impossible for a person to generate enough wind to move a sailboat on their own.
Undeterred, the team decides to try various methods of amplifying a person's breath in order to generate more wind. They experiment with using a snorkel and a megaphone, but find that neither device provides enough of a boost to make any significant difference.
Next, they try using a small fan to augment a person's breath. They attach the fan to the front of the sailboat and attempt to blow into the sail while the fan is running. This method proves more successful, but ultimately the team decides that it still wouldn't be practical for someone to try to sail a boat this way.
In the second half of the episode, the MythBusters take on another wind-related myth: can a vacuum cleaner be used to lift a person off the ground? They begin by building a harness that can support a person's weight, and then try out various types of vacuum cleaners to see if any are capable of generating enough suction to lift the harness.
After multiple attempts, the team finds that none of the vacuum cleaners they test are strong enough to lift the harness. However, they do discover that a vacuum cleaner can generate enough suction to create a seal between a person's feet and the ground, making it difficult for them to lift their feet.
Overall, "Blow Your Own Sail" is a fun and entertaining episode that showcases the MythBusters' creative problem-solving skills as they attempt to test two unusual myths related to wind power. While they ultimately conclude that neither myth is plausible, the experiments they perform and the methods they try are inventive and engaging. Fans of the show are sure to enjoy this episode as the MythBusters tackle two more myths in their quest to separate fact from fiction.
