In the first episode of Season 10 of MythBusters, titled "Mission Impossible Mask," hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman explore the validity of the masks used in the popular spy franchise, Mission: Impossible. The episode begins with a clip from the latest Mission: Impossible film, in which Tom Cruise's character Ethan Hunt is seen wearing a mask that allows him to impersonate another person.
Adam and Jamie want to know if such masks are really possible, and if they can be used to successfully fool someone who is familiar with the person being impersonated. To test this, they begin by creating a mask of Jamie's face, using 3D printing technology to make it as realistic as possible. Adam then puts on the mask and tries to convince several people, including Jamie's wife, that he is actually Jamie.
Their first attempt is a bit of a failure, as most people are able to detect that it's not actually Jamie after getting a closer look at Adam's eyes. But rather than giving up, Adam and Jamie try again with a different approach. This time, they create a mask of a female model's face and give it to a male model to wear. They then send him on a date with a woman who knows the model personally. Will she be able to tell that it's not the real person she's out with?
In addition to testing the masks themselves, the hosts also explore some of the technology used in the Mission: Impossible movies, such as voice modulators and other spy gadgets. They even try to create a device that can project an image of one person's face onto another's, as seen in one of the films.
Throughout the episode, Adam and Jamie also provide plenty of interesting facts and trivia about the Mission: Impossible franchise, such as the fact that Tom Cruise does many of his own stunts, including the famous scene where he hangs from the side of a plane.
Overall, Episode 1 of Season 10 of MythBusters offers a fun and engaging exploration of the science behind Mission: Impossible's iconic masks and gadgets. As always, Adam and Jamie make the process of testing these theories fascinating and entertaining, and viewers are sure to come away with a better understanding of just what is and isn't possible in the world of espionage.
