In the pilot episode of Mythbusters, hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman set out to tackle their first myth: can a rocket-powered car really take off like a plane? To test this, they acquire a 1967 Chevy Impala and get to work retrofitting it with a pair of jet engines salvaged from decommissioned military planes.
The process of installing the engines is not without its challenges, and the team faces several setbacks as they work to get the car up and running. But eventually, they are ready to take the Jet Assisted Chevy out for a test run.
The first attempt doesn't go quite as planned, with the car fishtailing and the engines failing to produce the necessary thrust. Undeterred, Adam and Jamie make some adjustments and try again. This time, the car launches down the runway and actually achieves lift-off.
However, things quickly go awry as the Jet Assisted Chevy loses control in mid-air and crashes back to earth. Thankfully, Adam and Jamie escape unscathed, but the car is completely destroyed.
Despite the failure, the pilot episode of Mythbusters sets the tone for the many myths and experiments the hosts will tackle throughout the series. With a commitment to science, curiosity, and a willingness to push the limits, Adam and Jamie engage in entertaining and informative investigations that challenge our assumptions about the world around us.
