Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 9 Episode 3

Ep 3. The Pumaman

  • April 4, 1998

In Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 9 episode 3, the crew finds themselves watching the 1980 superhero film The Pumaman. The plot follows a young American man named Tony who discovers he is the descendant of an ancient tribe of Aztec warriors and gains the powers of a puma. With his newfound abilities, Tony must stop an evil mastermind named Kobras from taking over the world.

As always, Joel and the robots are quick to mock the film's low-budget special effects and cheesy dialogue. At one point, they even break into a rendition of a "Pumaman" theme song, complete with jazzy saxophone riffs.

Despite its flaws, The Pumaman provides plenty of opportunities for the MST3K crew to crack jokes and riff on the movie's more ludicrous moments. Viewers can expect plenty of gags about Tony's questionable fashion choices (including a skintight puma suit) and his knack for crashing through walls.

In addition to the main feature, the episode also includes a short film called Radar Men from the Moon, in which a scientist and his team attempt to stop a villainous alien from stealing Earth's supply of cobalt. As usual, the MST3K crew pulls no punches when it comes to mocking the short's dated special effects and wooden acting.

Overall, Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 9 episode 3 offers up another dose of wacky humor and snarky commentary from Joel and the bots. It may not be high art, but for fans of the show's irreverent style, it's an entertaining way to pass the time.
