In the season 8 episode 20 of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the crew is subjected to the intergalactic adventure of Space Mutiny. The movie is set on board the starship Southern Sun, which is on a mission to colonize a new planet. However, the ship soon becomes the target of a rebel group, led by the evil Kalgan, who are intent on taking control of the vessel.
The crew of the Southern Sun are not prepared for a battle, and their only hope lies with the hero Dave Ryder, played by John Phillip Law. Dave is a muscular, suave and seemingly indestructible space hero who instantly captures the hearts of the female crew members and confounds the bad guys with his quick thinking and seemingly endless supply of cheesy one-liners.
As the battle between the rebels and the crew of the Southern Sun intensifies, so does the hilarity, thanks in large part to the commentary of the MST3K gang. Mike and his robot companions, Crow and Tom Servo, poke fun at everything from Dave Ryder's hairstyle to the ship's shoddy construction to the corny dialogue.
Throughout the movie, the gang delivers some of their most memorable quips, including Crow's "We're on a collision course with mocking!" and Tom Servo's "This movie's really hopping! By that I mean I wish it would hop into a blender." Their skewering of the movie's over-the-top action sequences, cheesy special effects and wooden performances are a constant source of amusement.
As the crew's situation grows more dire, the MST3K gang ramps up their commentary, making light of even the most dramatic moments. Despite the movie's best efforts to sell Dave Ryder as the greatest hero in the galaxy, Mike and his robot companions are only too happy to point out his many flaws and poke fun at his over-the-top machismo.
As the battle reaches its climax, the crew discovers a shocking secret that threatens to change everything they thought they knew about the mission. Tensions rise and emotions run high as the fate of the Southern Sun hangs in the balance.
Throughout the episode, the MST3K gang keeps the laughs coming with their trademark irreverence and quick wit. Their commentary adds an extra layer of entertainment to an already ridiculous and enjoyable movie. Space Mutiny is a prime example of the kind of movie that is perfectly suited for the MST3K treatment, and the crew's riffing makes it an episode that is truly out of this world.
