Ep 5. Being from Another Planet

In Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 4 episode 5, titled "Being from Another Planet," the crew of the Satellite of Love find themselves joined by a new member: a small robot named Cambot. Together, they watch and riff on a cheesy 1950s sci-fi movie called "Being from Another Planet."

As the film begins, a group of scientists are investigating a meteor crash when they discover an alien spacecraft hidden inside. Before they can properly investigate, the ship takes off and crashes in another part of the world. Meanwhile, an alien named Derek enters into the life of a young boy named Timmy, who quickly becomes enamored with the friendly extraterrestrial. However, this peaceful coexistence is threatened when the military finds out about the alien and begins a hunt to capture him.

As the crew of the Satellite of Love watch the movie, they poke fun at everything from the poorly-constructed alien suit to the unrealistic military tactics. Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo have a field day making fun of the movie's ridiculous plot and lackluster special effects. In between jokes, they even take time to ponder the strange subtext of the film, including its unintentionally homoerotic undertones and bizarre emphasis on bowling.

Throughout the episode, the MST3K crew also deal with their own personal issues. Joel struggles to control a pesky plant that's growing out of control while Crow and Tom Servo bicker over who gets to control the ship's "puppet interface."

In the end, "Being from Another Planet" proves to be a perfect target for Mystery Science Theater 3000's signature brand of snarky commentary. The episode is a classic example of the show at its best, with hilarious jokes and plenty of witty banter from the entire cast. Whether you're a longtime fan of the series or a newcomer looking for a laugh, "Being from Another Planet" is a must-see episode that's sure to leave you in stitches.
