Ep 11. It Conquered the World

  • August 24, 1991

In the eleventh episode of the third season of Mystery Science Theater 3000, entitled It Conquered the World, Joel and the Bots take on a classic B-movie about a Venusian alien and his takeover of Earth. The film, directed by prolific filmmaker Roger Corman, tells the story of Dr. Paul Nelson, a scientist who becomes convinced that Earth is in danger due to the machinations of an alien being named Zontar.

The film begins with a strange object falling from the sky and landing in a small town in California. Dr. Nelson and his friend, Dr. Tom Anderson, soon discover that the object is a transmitter sent by Zontar, an alien from Venus who is intent on taking over the Earth. Dr. Nelson becomes obsessed with warning the world about the alien threat, but his warnings fall on deaf ears.

As the film progresses, Zontar begins to use mind control to take over the minds of the people of Earth. Dr. Nelson becomes increasingly desperate to stop the alien, but his efforts are hindered by the government and the military, who are skeptical of his claims.

As Joel and the Bots watch the film, they provide hilarious commentary and jokes throughout, poking fun at the cheesy special effects, outdated technology, and nonsensical plot. They also engage in several skits and musical numbers, adding to the overall entertainment value of the episode.

One of the highlights of the episode is the riffing on the character of Dr. Nelson, played by actor Lee Van Cleef. Joel and the Bots have a field day with Van Cleef's over-the-top performance, poking fun at his intense glares and melodramatic delivery.

Overall, It Conquered the World is a classic episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, featuring a beloved B-movie and plenty of witty humor from Joel and the Bots. Fans of the show will not want to miss out on this season three gem.
