In Mystery Diners season 4 episode 7, titled "Wine on Wheels," the team goes undercover to investigate a mobile wine bar business in Temecula, California. The owner, Ray, is concerned that his employees may be drinking on the job and stealing from him. To get to the bottom of the issue, the Mystery Diners team sets up hidden cameras and sends in two undercover Mystery Diners as customers.
One of the Mystery Diners, Patrick, orders a glass of wine and strikes up a conversation with one of the bartenders, Rob. Rob seems knowledgeable about wine but is pouring extremely generous portions for each glass. Meanwhile, the other Mystery Diner, Isabella, orders a cheese plate and observes one of the servers, Erin, pocketing money from cash payments.
As the investigation continues, the Mystery Diners discover that Rob is secretly pouring wine for himself and his fellow bartenders during slow periods, which is causing the business to lose money. Additionally, Erin has been pocketing cash payments instead of ringing them up in the register. However, she claims that she simply forgot to enter them and promises to make it right.
The Mystery Diners report their findings to Ray, who is disappointed but grateful for the investigation. He confronts Rob and Erin and decides to suspend them both. He also implements a new policy of monitoring the wine pours more closely and requiring more thorough cash handling procedures.
Overall, "Wine on Wheels" offers an exciting look into the world of mobile wine bars and the potential challenges that come with running such a business. The Mystery Diners team once again proves their expertise in uncovering staff misconduct and providing solutions for restaurant owners.
