In the episode "Too Many Cooks," the Mystery Diners go undercover at a struggling restaurant in St. Louis to investigate why their profits have been declining. The owner, Dave, suspects that his staff may be stealing or giving away food, but he doesn't have any concrete evidence. To help him get to the bottom of things, he turns to the Mystery Diners.
The team sets up hidden cameras throughout the restaurant and sends in two Mystery Diners: Tristine and Adam. Tristine poses as a new waitress, while Adam works in the kitchen as a line cook. As soon as they start their shifts, they notice that something is off. The kitchen is disorganized and chaotic, and the staff seems to be more concerned with socializing than working.
Tristine's first table is a group of rowdy men who seem more interested in getting drunk than ordering food. To her surprise, one of the men offers her a tip to bring them some beers from the back. Suspicious, Tristine declines and reports the incident to Dave.
Meanwhile, Adam is struggling to keep up in the kitchen. He notices that several of the other cooks are not following food safety protocols, and one in particular seems to be deliberately messing up orders. Adam reports all of this to Dave as well.
Throughout the night, the Mystery Diners observe a number of other troubling incidents. One server is caught smoking in the kitchen, a cook is seen eating food off customers' plates, and a group of employees is caught on camera sneaking shots of alcohol behind the bar.
At the end of the night, Dave is presented with all of the evidence, and he is shocked and disappointed by what he sees. He immediately takes action, firing several employees and implementing stricter policies for food safety and security.
Thanks to the Mystery Diners' help, Dave is able to get his restaurant back on track and regain the trust of his customers.
