In this episode of My Greek Table with Diane Kochilas season 3, viewers are taken to the island of Evia. Although it is the second largest Greek island, Evia is often overlooked by tourists in favor of more well-known destinations. However, this episode shows that Evia is truly a hidden gem, rich in history, culture, and most importantly, delicious food.
Diane begins her journey in the village of Steni, where she meets local farmer Maria, who gives Diane a tour of her farm. Maria's farm is a perfect example of the traditional agricultural practices that are still alive and well on the island. They walk through olive groves, pick figs off the trees, and finally arrive at a little farmhouse where they sample some of Maria's homemade cheeses.
Next, Diane heads to a little village in the mountains called Kymi, where she meets local chef and restauranteur Ioanna. Ioanna takes Diane to a nearby farm where they pick fresh greens and herbs to use in the day's cooking. She also shows Diane how to make a traditional dish of stuffed zucchinis, or kolokithakia yemista.
After a delicious lunch, Diane heads to the coast of Evia to visit the town of Karystos. This is a town with a rich history, dating back to ancient times when it was an important trading port. Diane visits the castle of Karystos, built by the Venetians during the Middle Ages, and takes a walk through the town's picturesque streets.
Later that day, Diane meets up with local fishermen in the small village of Marmari. They take her out on their boat to catch some of the island's famous seafood. They pull up nets filled with sardines, octopus, and more. Once back on shore, Diane joins the fishermen for a seafood feast, including sardines grilled over an open flame and octopus cooked in wine.
For her final stop on the island, Diane visits a small village in the north called Rovies. This is a town famous for its olive oil, and Diane gets a tour of the local olive press. She meets the owner, who explains the process of making olive oil and introduces Diane to some of the different varieties they produce.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to stunning views of Evia's beautiful landscape, from its mountains and forests to its beaches and coastline. They also get to meet some of the island's friendly and welcoming locals, who are passionate about their traditional way of life and the food that comes with it.
Overall, this episode of My Greek Table with Diane Kochilas season 3 is a celebration of the hidden treasures that can be found in Greece, even on an island as unassuming as Evia. With its delicious food, rich history, and stunning scenery, Evia is a destination every traveler should add to their list.
