My Generation is a drama television series that premiered on ABC in 2010 and ran for one season with twelve episodes. The show was created by Noah Hawley and executive produced by Hawley and Warren Littlefield. The series was centered around a group of high school students who were filmed for a documentary in the year 2000 and then revisited after ten years to see how their lives had changed.
The main character of the show is Steven Foster, played by Julian Morris. Steven was the popular kid in high school and the captain of the football team. He was also in a relationship with his high school girlfriend, Jackie Vachs, played by Jaime King. We see Steven ten years later finding it hard to move on from his high school days, as he is still trying to live in the past. Jackie, on the other hand, has moved on and is now successful and married.
The other characters in the show are Kenneth Finley, played by Keir O'Donnell, who was the class clown in high school and is now a struggling journalist. He is trying to prove himself in the industry while dealing with personal issues. Dawn Barbuso, played by Daniella Alonso, was the wallflower in high school who had a crush on one of her classmates. She is now successful and working as a bond trader, but is still haunted by her high school past. Brenda Serrano, played by Ana VillafaƱe, was the overachiever in high school and is now a successful lawyer. She is constantly battling with her personal and professional life. Anders Holt, played by Michael Stahl-David, was the loner in high school who later became successful and wealthy due to his tech company. He is still somewhat of an outsider and has trouble connecting with people.
The show is unique in its filming style, as it incorporates actual footage from the year 2000 documentary that was filmed. The show starts off with Steven narrating the events of the year 2000 as the viewer sees footage of the students from that time. The story then jumps to ten years later and we see how the students have changed. The characters constantly refer back to the footage, which adds an interesting layer to the show.
The show deals with themes such as nostalgia, regret, unfulfilled dreams, and the pressure of living up to the expectations set in high school. Steven's character is a prime example of this as he struggles to let go of his high school days and move on. Brenda's character also deals with the pressure of being successful and the high expectations she has set for herself.
My Generation was met with mixed reviews and was ultimately canceled after one season due to low ratings. However, the show did have a small but dedicated cult following. The show was praised for its unique format and interesting characters, but criticized for its uneven tone and plotlines.
Daniella Alonso's portrayal of Dawn Barbuso was a standout in the series. Her character had a fascinating arc as she went from being a wallflower in high school to a successful bond trader in the present day. Alonso portrayed the character's inner turmoil and struggles with authenticity and nuance.
In conclusion, My Generation was a short-lived but interesting series that tackled themes of nostalgia, regret, and unfulfilled dreams. The show's unique format incorporating actual footage from the year 2000 documentary added an interesting layer to the show. Despite being canceled after one season, the show did have a small but dedicated cult following. Daniella Alonso's portrayal of Dawn Barbuso was a standout in the series.
