In the fifth season of the hit BBC sitcom, My Family, we join the Harper family once again as they navigate their way through the ups and downs of family life. In episode 6, titled "My Will Be Done", we find the Harpers dealing with the uncomfortable topic of death and inheritance.
The episode kicks off with Ben (Robert Lindsay) becoming increasingly worried about his own mortality. After experiencing a sharp pain in his chest, he begins to fear the worst and sets about putting his affairs in order. This includes creating a will and deciding how he wants his possessions to be distributed after his death.
This news comes as a shock to the rest of the family, particularly Ben's wife Susan (Zoe Wanamaker). She is alarmed by his sudden fixation on death and worries that he might be keeping something from her. Meanwhile, their son Michael (Gabriel Thomson) is excited at the prospect of inheritance and starts making plans for what he'll do with his share of the money.
As Ben's preoccupation with his mortality grows, he begins to make increasingly irrational decisions. This is exemplified when he insists on planning his own funeral, despite the fact that he's perfectly healthy. Susan tries to calm him down and convince him to focus on the present, but he remains fixated on the future.
It's not just Ben who's thinking about inheritance, though. Susan's sister, Jean (Doreen Mantle), who has recently come into a large sum of money, is keen to make sure that her own interests are protected. She enlists the help of her nephew Nick (Kris Marshall), who's a lawyer, to advise her on the best way to safeguard her newfound wealth.
All of this discussion about inheritance leads to some uncomfortable moments for the Harpers. They're forced to confront issues such as mortality, greed, and jealousy, and it becomes clear that they don't always see eye-to-eye on these matters. However, they eventually manage to come to an agreement that satisfies everyone, in their typically chaotic fashion.
As always, My Family manages to strike a balance between hilarity and heartwarming family moments. This particular episode is no exception, and fans of the show are sure to be delighted by the latest installment in the Harper family's ongoing adventures.
