Ginko, a Mushi Master, embarks on a journey to the Field of Fire to help a young girl named Tanyu. The Field of Fire is a place where a destructive, fire-breathing Mushi lives. Tanyu's family has been tasked with recording the history of the area, and they are dealing with a cursed tome. The book has sapped the life force of her ancestors, and it’s rapidly consuming Tanyu. The story follows Ginko as he explores the conflict between the Mushi, the cursed book, and the history it contains.
Upon arriving at the Field of Fire, Ginko discovers that there are two families living in the area. One family, the Zenno family, has been entrusted with keeping the giant Mushi that resides in the Field of Fire from endangering the neighboring villages. The other family, the Biki family, has been tasked with recording the history of the area, and they are the ones who are dealing with the cursed tome.
Ginko notices that the Biki family is in a dire state and tries to help by treating Tanyu. However, Tanyu's parents are wary of Ginko, feeling that the Mushi Master is meddling in their family's affairs. Ginko assures them that he is only trying to help and explains that he has come to the Field of Fire to study the giant Mushi.
After meeting with the Zenno family, Ginko discusses with them the giant Mushi that lives in the Field of Fire. They explain that the Mushi is a fire-breathing creature that would attack the neighboring villages if it were to be let loose. They confide in Ginko that their family can no longer take care of the Mushi.
Meanwhile, Tanyu continues to suffer from her affliction. The curse has left her body weakened, and she is slowly dying. Her parents plead with Ginko to help Tanyu and bring an end to the curse once and for all. Ginko agrees but insists that he needs to study the cursed book in order to find a cure.
As Ginko studies the tome, he discovers that it has a strange power. The book is a recording of the entire history of the area and has absorbed the life force of its recorders over the years. He realizes that the tome is the reason behind the Biki family's affliction.
Ginko contemplates on how to defeat the cursed tome, but he is interrupted by the Zenno family. They reveal that they plan to kill the giant Mushi, which they feel is their duty as a family. However, Ginko warns them not to do so, saying that the Mushi may have a vital role in regulating the area's ecosystem.
After much contemplation, Ginko comes up with a solution. He decides to release the giant Mushi, which will cause a volcanic eruption and cover the cursed tome with ash, effectively stopping it from absorbing any more life force.
The plan works, and the Mushi, now freed, disappears. The ash covers the cursed tome, and the Biki family is free from its curse. Tanyu is cured, and she resumes her recording duties. Ginko departs and continues his journey, leaving behind a peaceful and balanced Field of Fire.
Journey to the Field of Fire is a contemplative and thought-provoking episode that delves into the themes of history, family, and balance. It showcases the beauty of the Mushi and their interdependence with their environment. The episode also highlights the dangers of unchecked curiosity and the importance of balance in the world. Overall, it is an excellent addition to the Mushishi franchise and is a must-watch for fans of the show.
