In the second episode of Mushishi, titled "Eyelids' Light," we are introduced to a young girl named Sachi who has been living with her grandmother in a small village. Sachi's grandmother is a renowned healer who has dedicated her life to helping others, but one day she falls ill herself, and no one in the village can cure her.
Desperate to help her grandmother, Sachi turns to Ginko, the wandering mushishi who she has heard can cure any ailment. Ginko agrees to help Sachi, but when he arrives at her village, he discovers that her grandmother's illness is not caused by a normal disease, but by a mushi that is feeding off her life force.
As Ginko investigates, he discovers that the mushi responsible for the illness is one that is attracted to the light emitted by human eyelids when they are closed. When Sachi's grandmother sleeps, the mushi drains her life force, causing her illness to worsen.
Ginko realizes that the only way to save Sachi's grandmother is to somehow keep her awake, so that the mushi cannot drain her life force. He creates a makeshift device to keep her eyes open and stays with her throughout the night to make sure it works.
Despite Ginko's efforts, the mushi still manages to drain some of her life force, and her condition worsens. Ginko realizes that the only way to truly save her is to find a way to lure the mushi away.
He discovers that the mushi is attracted to fire, and with some creative thinking, he is able to lead it away from Sachi's grandmother and into the nearby forest where it can feed without harming anyone.
With the mushi gone, Sachi's grandmother begins to recover, and the village is filled with gratitude towards Ginko for his help.
The episode ends with Ginko on the road again, wandering and helping others affected by mushi.
