In the eleventh episode of Mushishi season one, titled "The Sleeping Mountain," Ginko travels to a remote mountain village where the inhabitants are plagued by a mysterious illness. The villagers believe that a mountain spirit known as Kanro is responsible for the illness, as it has been exhibiting strange behavior recently. While investigating the illness, Ginko discovers that the villagers are suffering from a rare form of infection caused by a parasite that lives on the rocks in the mountains.
Ginko learns that Kanro is not a spirit, but a sentient mushi that has been disturbed by the inhabitants of the village. The mushi has been infecting the villagers with its spores, causing them to fall into a deep sleep. Ginko realizes that the only way to cure the villagers is to remove the infected rocks, but doing so would anger Kanro and cause it to lash out. Ginko must find a way to remove the infected rocks without provoking Kanro and further endangering the village.
As he investigates the situation further, Ginko discovers that there is a much deeper history between Kanro and the villagers than he initially thought. He learns that Kanro has been a part of the mountain for generations and that the villagers have long worshipped it as a god. However, in recent years, the village has become increasingly modernized, and the villagers have stopped paying tribute to Kanro. This neglect has caused Kanro to become angry and lash out at the villagers.
Ginko realizes that the only way to save the villagers is to restore the balance between them and Kanro. He seeks the help of one of the town's elders, who tells him that the only way to appease Kanro is to perform an ancient ritual that has been passed down through generations. The ritual involves making a mask that represents Kanro and wearing it while performing a dance. The dance is meant to show respect for Kanro and ask for his forgiveness.
Ginko sets out to perform the ritual with the help of the elder and a few of the villagers. The dance is a success, and Kanro is appeased by their efforts. With Kanro's blessing, Ginko is able to remove the infected rocks without incident. As the villagers begin to wake up from their sleep, they realize the error of their ways and vow to pay tribute to Kanro once again.
Overall, "The Sleeping Mountain" is a powerful episode that explores the relationship between humans and nature. It delves into the complex history and beliefs of a mountain village and the consequences that come from neglecting the natural world. With its stunning animation and beautiful soundtrack, this episode is a must-watch for any anime fan.
