Detective William Murdoch and his team return in the ninth season of Murdoch Mysteries, a Canadian police procedural that takes place in the late 19th century.
In episode six of season nine, titled The Local Option, the city is divided over the issue of alcohol and whether or not it should be sold and served in public establishments. Temperance advocates, led by a local pastor, are protesting against the proposal to introduce The Local Option, which would allow for the sale of alcohol in hotels and restaurants.
At the same time, Murdoch is called to investigate the murder of a local businessman, who was found dead in his hotel room. The businessman, George Washington, was the owner of a successful brewery and was strongly in favor of The Local Option. As the investigation unfolds, Murdoch and his team discover a web of potential suspects, including the pastor leading the temperance movement, a rival brewery owner, and an ex-employee who was fired by Washington.
Meanwhile, Murdoch's personal life is also in flux. His wife Julia is pregnant, which changes their daily routines and adds a new level of stress to their relationship as they prepare for the arrival of their first child. Despite the challenges, Murdoch and Julia continue to support each other and work together to solve the case.
As the investigation into George Washington's murder progresses, Murdoch and his team uncover secrets about the brewing industry, political corruption, and personal rivalries that may have led to the businessman's death. Desperate to find the killer and bring them to justice, Murdoch must navigate a complex web of interests and allegiances while also dealing with his own personal demons.
The Local Option is a compelling episode that tackles issues of morality, personal responsibility, and societal norms. As always, Murdoch's team uses scientific methods and deductive reasoning to solve the case, while also grappling with the larger forces at play in the city and the brewing industry. With a mix of historical accuracy, thrilling mysteries, and engaging characters, Murdoch Mysteries continues to capture the hearts and minds of viewers around the world.
