In the eleventh episode of Murdoch Mysteries season 2, entitled "Let Us Ask the Maiden," Detective William Murdoch and Constable George Crabtree are called to investigate a peculiar case that begins with two young women kissing in public.
At the start of the episode, a group of women are protesting for their right to vote and are holding a rally in front of the Queen's Hotel, where they are met with jeers and taunts from onlookers. Murdoch and Crabtree are assigned to keep an eye on proceedings to ensure that things don't escalate.
Whilst on their stakeout, they see two women share a kiss, which turns out to have been a stunt to get attention for their cause. However, later that night, one of the women, Violet Hart, is found murdered, and her girlfriend, Rose Maxwell, is the prime suspect.
Murdoch initially believes Rose to be innocent and sets out to prove it. His investigation leads him to Violet's workplace, where he discovers that she worked as a maid for a wealthy family. He interviews the family's daughter, who had shown an interest in Violet and has a history of violence towards women.
As the investigation continues, Murdoch and his team discover more suspects, including a wealthy businessman who had been rejected by Violet and a disgruntled former maid who had been fired by the family Violet worked for.
Throughout the episode, Murdoch is also dealing with personal issues. He is concerned about his father's health and is still struggling to move on from his recent breakup. His interactions with his colleagues and the suspects highlight his emotional vulnerability and his desire to do the right thing.
As the investigation intensifies, Murdoch and Crabtree uncover shocking secrets and deceitful motives, and they must use their wit and skills to solve the case before the culprit strikes again.
