In season 7 episode 17 of Murder, She Wrote titled "The Prodigal Father," Jessica Fletcher finds herself investigating a murder that hits close to home when her friend and fellow writer, Howard Griffin, is accused of killing his estranged father, a famous author.
Upon arriving in New York to help Howard, Jessica is surprised to learn that he has been estranged from his father for years and that their relationship was strained due to Howard's own literary aspirations. Howard's father had been known for a popular detective series, and he accused his son of stealing his ideas and tarnishing his legacy.
As Jessica begins to dig deeper into the case, she realizes that there are many possible suspects with motives for killing the elder Griffin. From jealous family members to disgruntled business partners, everyone seems to have had a reason to want him dead. Meanwhile, Howard's own potential motive, as well as his alibi, come under scrutiny from both Jessica and the police.
With the case growing increasingly complex, Jessica must use all of her wit and detective skills to uncover the truth and prove her friend's innocence. As always, the episode is filled with suspense, drama, and a surprising twist ending that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
