In season 5 episode 13 of Murder, She Wrote, entitled "Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble," Jessica Fletcher finds herself investigating the mysterious murder of a local business owner. The victim, Mallory Fairmont, was a successful proprietor of a popular gourmet food store in Cabot Cove, and she was well-liked by many in the community.
However, when Jessica starts investigating the crime scene, she quickly realizes that things are not as they seem. Although there are no obvious signs of forced entry, the store's alarm system had been disabled. Jessica begins to suspect that Mallory knew her killer and may have even let them into the store willingly.
As Jessica begins to interview the people closest to Mallory, she discovers that there were many who had reasons to want her dead. Mallory had a contentious relationship with her ex-husband, who stood to benefit from her death. Additionally, her business partner had been pushing her to sell the store, and there were rumors that he had been stealing from the business.
As Jessica delves deeper into Mallory's life, she uncovers a web of deceit and betrayal that she never could have imagined. With each new clue, the list of suspects grows longer, and Jessica must use all her talents as a detective and writer to solve the murder.
Along the way, Jessica enlists the help of her friends in law enforcement, including Sheriff Amos Tupper and Dr. Seth Hazlitt, as well as her old friend and fellow mystery writer, Emma MacGill. Together, they work to piece together the clues and uncover the truth about Mallory's murder.
