Jessica is off to the Land of the Midnight Sun, the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, to put in some research hours for her new book about early American espionage. Most of her fellow passengers on the flight to Anchorage are other tourists and employees of Callewaert Tours, a company specializing in outdoor recreation. Among them is Harvey Weskit, an obnoxious, hard-drinking lawyer who insults everyone he meets, including his wife Candy, and who has gotten on Kate O'Malley's last nerve. Kate is leading the group of tourists and won't put up with any nonsense from her charges. Upon arrival in Anchorage, the group hooks up with private pilots Archie and Ellie Miles, who will fly them out to the remote islands to begin their adventure. On the flight to the island, one of the passengers is found dead in his seat. It seems that he succumbed to a heart attack, but Jessica, having seen he was in good health just hours earlier, is convinced that he was murdered. When the plane lands, Ellie also turns up dead. Jessica's instincts are further heightened when it is revealed that the two victims were wealthy businessmen with ties to a mysterious women's charitable organization. Jessica, with the help of Alaskan State Trooper Lt. George Ostos, begins to unravel the convoluted web, of political corruption, espionage and cold-blooded murder.
