Jessica Fletcher is a writer of mystery novels who finds herself in the midst of a real-life murder mystery in the small town of Cabot Cove. In season 2 episode 3, Murder in the Afternoon, Jessica is enjoying a relaxing day with her friends in town until her friend, Eve Simpson, gets a call from her husband at the television station where he works. It seems that one of his co-workers, Tony, has been murdered.
When Jessica arrives at the station, she finds chaos and confusion as the police and other employees try to sort out what happened. Tony was a popular figure at the station and everyone is shocked by his murder. Jessica manages to get a chance to speak with Tony's boss and learns that there were a number of people who had motive to kill Tony.
As Jessica begins to investigate, she discovers that Tony had a lot of secrets. His marriage was falling apart, he had a gambling problem, and he had been stealing memorabilia from the station. Jessica's investigation takes her to the homes of several suspects, including Tony's wife, his gambling buddies, and a fellow employee who had been feuding with him. With each encounter, Jessica gathers more information that helps her piece together what happened on the day of the murder.
In the meantime, the police are also conducting their investigation, but Jessica is convinced they are on the wrong track. She shares her theories with the lead detective and together, they begin to unravel the complex web of lies and deceit that surrounded Tony.
