Jessica Fletcher finds herself in the middle of a mystery in the small town of Grady, where she's been invited to give a speech at the annual Grady Fair. When she arrives in town, she's greeted warmly by the locals, including the owner of the local diner, Mona Wilson and her cook, Earl Sunderland.
However, as the fair begins, tensions start to rise between Mona and Earl. Mona is concerned that Earl is skimping on the ingredients, while Earl is frustrated that Mona doesn't trust him to run the kitchen. The situation comes to a head when Mona finds a dime in the bottom of the soup pot and accuses Earl of putting it there, implying that he's trying to cut costs.
The next morning, Jessica is woken up by the sound of sirens, and she rushes to the diner to find that it's on fire. The town rallies together to put out the flames, but tragedy strikes when Earl is found dead in the back of the kitchen with a knife in his back. The police quickly determine that it was a murder and all eyes turn to Mona as the main suspect.
Unwilling to believe that Mona would take a life, Jessica begins to investigate the case on her own. She talks to the fair attendees, the staff of the diner, and anyone else who might have had a motive to kill Earl. She discovers that there were many people who disliked Earl, including the waitress who had a crush on him, the local banker who was angry that Earl had been turning down his loan applications, and the car mechanic who had a longstanding grudge against Earl.
As Jessica delves deeper into the case, she uncovers secrets that have been hidden in the town for years. She discovers that Earl wasn't the person everyone thought he was and that the seemingly innocent Mona had been caught up in a web of deception and lies.
With the help of the local sheriff and her own keen intellect, Jessica is able to solve the case and bring the killer to justice. In the end, the town comes together to rebuild the diner and honor Earl's memory, while Jessica heads back home, already thinking about her next mystery to solve.
