Jessica Fletcher is a mystery writer and amateur sleuth who stumbles upon crimes and ultimately solves them, in the small fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine. Season 1 Episode 16, 'Tough Guys Don't Die,' sees Jessica investigate the murder of a private investigator who had recently moved to Cabot Cove.

The episode opens with Jessica attending a private investigator's convention in Miami. There she meets Harry McGraw, a tough, streetwise gumshoe from New York. Harry is the keynote speaker and regales the audience with stories of his exploits in the underworld of the big city, where he works as a private eye. Jessica is intrigued by Harry's tough exterior and his no-nonsense approach to dealing with criminals.

After the convention, Jessica and Harry board a plane to Cabot Cove, where Harry has a new case. He's been hired by a powerful local businessman, Martin Hastings, who suspects that his wife, Sylvia, is having an affair. Jessica tells Harry that she's been invited to dinner that evening by her old friend, Seth Hazlitt, the local doctor.

That night, Jessica meets Seth at his house and they share a quiet dinner. Suddenly, there's a knock at the door and Harry bursts in, covered in blood. He tells Jessica and Seth that he's been attacked by two men who were waiting for him outside his hotel room. Seth patches up Harry's wounds, but Harry is shaken up by the attack and begs Jessica to help him solve the case.

The next day, Jessica visits Harry at his hotel room and discovers that he's been searching the local paper for information on Martin Hastings' wife. Jessica realizes that Harry's case may be connected to the murder of a local private investigator, Jack Anderson, who was found dead in his office the day before. Jack had recently been hired to investigate Sylvia Hastings, and Jessica suspects that his murder may be related to Harry's attack.

As Jessica begins to investigate the murder, she is stonewalled by the local police and Martin Hastings, who wants to keep the case out of the public eye. But with Harry by her side, Jessica refuses to let the case go. Together, they track down leads, interview suspects, and piece together the evidence until they finally uncover the truth.

Throughout the episode, Jessica and Harry's differing investigative styles are on full display. Jessica is a cerebral and meticulous detective, who uses her wit and charm to glean information from suspects. Harry, on the other hand, is a hard-edged tough guy, who relies on intimidation and brute strength to get what he wants. Despite their differences, the two become unlikely allies and develop a mutual respect for each other.

In the end, Jessica and Harry crack the case and solve the murder of Jack Anderson. Tough Guys Don't Die is a classic murder mystery episode, with all the trappings of the genre – shady suspects, a web of lies and deception, and a surprising twist ending. With Jessica's keen mind and Harry's street smarts, this unlikely duo proves that sometimes the toughest cases require a little bit of both.
