Mulaney is a comedy television series created by and starring John Mulaney, a well-known stand-up comedian, writer, and producer. In season 1 episode 6 titled Patriot Acts, Mulaney and his friends Jane and Motif get involved in a political campaign when they help out a young politician in his election bid.
The episode begins with John, Jane, and Motif at their usual hangout spot, a diner, talking about current events. They overhear a young politician named Ted (played by Griffin Newman) talking to a group of people about his campaign to become a city council member. Ted is young, inexperienced, and has no money or staff to help him in his campaign. John, Jane, and Motif are impressed by his passion and decide to help him out.
They start by creating a campaign ad for Ted and posting it on social media. The ad is a hit and it catches the attention of a local news channel, who invite Ted to appear on their show. John, Jane, and Motif accompany Ted to the studio and help him prepare for the interview. Ted, however, is a terrible public speaker and freezes up on live TV.
Despite the disastrous interview, Ted continues his campaign. He holds a rally in a park, where John, Jane, and Motif help him set up. The rally is attended by a handful of people, including an eccentric musician named Eugene (played by Fred Armisen). Eugene offers to perform a song at the rally, but his song is both bizarre and inappropriate.
The group eventually makes their way to a debate between Ted and his opponent. Ted, once again, struggles in his public speaking skills, but John, Jane, and Motif help him out by feeding him answers through an earpiece. However, things go awry when Ted accidentally exposes the earpiece on live TV.
The episode culminates in a final rally where Ted and his opponent make their final pitches to the crowd. Ted gives an impassioned speech, but his opponent delivers a more polished performance. When it comes time to vote, Ted loses by a landslide.
Despite the loss, John, Jane, and Motif are proud of their work and remain optimistic about Ted's future in politics. The episode closes with the group back at the diner, discussing their next adventure.
Overall, Mulaney season 1 episode 6 Patriot Acts is a commentary on the American political system and the power of grassroots movements. The episode is peppered with political humor, but the heart of the story lies in the friendship between John, Jane, and Motif and their willingness to help a friend in need.
