Mr. Mercedes is a crime thriller television series that aired on the Audience Network from August 2017 to November 2019. The show is based on Stephen King's novel of the same name and follows retired detective Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) as he chases down a serial killer known as Mr. Mercedes.
The first season of Mr. Mercedes introduces the audience to Bill Hodges, a grizzled and bitter ex-cop who is haunted by the unsolved case of Mr. Mercedes, a psychopathic killer who plowed his car into a group of people waiting for a job fair. Mr. Mercedes, whose real name is Brady Hartsfield (Harry Treadaway), is a tech-savvy young man who taunts Hodges with messages and videos. Hartsfield is an extremely disturbed individual who was driven to murder by his abusive mother (Kelly Lynch) and the trauma of his childhood.
As Hodges investigates the case, he is aided by a young computer whiz named Jerome Robinson (Jharrel Jerome) and his old partner on the force, Pete Huntley (Scott Lawrence). Hodges also becomes acquainted with Janey Patterson (Mary-Louise Parker), the sister of one of Mr. Mercedes' victims, and her mother, Ida Silver (Holland Taylor), who is suffering from dementia but remembers some key details about the case.
Throughout the first season, Hodges and his team try to outsmart Mr. Mercedes and put him behind bars, while Hartsfield becomes increasingly brazen and violent. The tension builds to a thrilling climax in the season finale, which sees Hodges and Hartsfield coming face-to-face in a suspenseful showdown.
In the second season of Mr. Mercedes, the story picks up a year after the events of the first season. Hartsfield is in a vegetative state, confined to a hospital bed, but his presence is still felt as a new serial killer starts targeting people connected to the Mercedes case. Hodges is pulled back into the investigation, reluctantly teaming up with Hartsfield's doctor, Felix Babineau (Jack Huston), and his ambitious wife, Cora (Tessa Ferrer). The new killer, who goes by the name of "The Babysitter Killer," is just as elusive and sinister as Mr. Mercedes, and once again, Hodges and his allies must use all their resources to catch him before he strikes again.
Throughout the second season, Hodges also grapples with his own personal demons, including his troubled relationship with his daughter, Allie (Anna Claire Cloudsley), and his growing feelings for Janey Patterson. Meanwhile, Ida Silver's condition continues to deteriorate, and she becomes a pawn in Cora and Felix's twisted schemes.
The third and final season of Mr. Mercedes brings the story to a satisfying conclusion, as Hodges and his team finally bring all the loose ends together. The focus of the season is on Hartsfield, who wakes up from his coma and begins manipulating those around him to carry out a sinister plan. As Hartsfield's true identity and intentions are revealed, Hodges and his allies risk everything to stop him once and for all.
Overall, Mr. Mercedes is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Brendan Gleeson delivers a masterful performance as the flawed but determined Bill Hodges, while Jharrel Jerome brings a youthful energy and intelligence to the role of Jerome Robinson. The supporting cast, including Holland Taylor, Kelly Lynch, and Justine Lupe (who plays Holly Gibney, a character introduced in King's novel "Finders Keepers"), are all excellent as well. The show is dark and disturbing at times, but also has moments of humor and heart that make it a must-watch for fans of the crime genre.
Mr. Mercedes is a series that ran for 3 seasons (30 episodes) between August 9, 2017 and on Audience Network
