Royce (Ted Danson) returns to Los Angeles from his wintry hometown of Burlington, Vermont to find the city in even more disarray than when he left. Tom (Vella Lovell) spends the day helping Mayor McCoy (Bobby Moynihan) avoid an even bigger disaster.
The second season of Mr. Mayor kicks off with an extremely hilarious episode titled "Move Fast and Break Things." Ted Danson returns as former businessman Neil Bremer who was unexpectedly thrust into the role of mayor after winning an election. The show is a political satire of sorts that revolves around Neil trying to balance his responsibilities as a public servant while also dealing with his personal life.
When we last saw Neil, he had just managed to win the mayoral race in Los Angeles after facing off against Arpi (Holly Hunter), a councilwoman who was favored to win. Neil wasn't exactly thrilled to win the race, but he decided to give it a shot anyway. However, as we find out in the new episode, things have only gone from bad to worse since he started the job.
The episode opens with Neil returning to Los Angeles after spending some time in his hometown of Burlington, Vermont. He had flown there to spend Christmas with his family, but he ended up getting stranded there due to the snowstorm. Although he's glad to be back in sunny LA, he quickly realizes that things have not been going well in his absence. The whole city seems to be in disarray, and he has a lot of work to do if he wants to turn things around.
The episode's title is a reference to the Silicon Valley mantra of "move fast and break things," which basically means that it's better to experiment and take risks than to be cautious and play it safe. In the world of politics, this can be a dangerous philosophy, and Neil quickly finds out that his advisor Jayden (Bobby Moynihan) has been taking this approach to heart.
Jayden has proposed a new policy that would allow electric scooters to be ridden on sidewalks, which has caused chaos in the streets. Neil is not pleased with this idea, and he spends most of the episode trying to put a stop to it before things get even worse. Meanwhile, his personal life is also starting to spiral out of control, as he tries to balance his job with his relationship with his daughter Orly (Kyla Kenedy).
As always, the show's cast is phenomenal, with Ted Danson putting in another great performance as Neil. Vella Lovell is also great as Tom, Neil's right-hand woman, who spends the day trying to avoid a disaster. The supporting characters also get some great moments, with Bobby Moynihan (who plays both Jayden and Mayor McCoy) getting some hilarious scenes.
Overall, "Move Fast and Break Things" is a great start to the second season of Mr. Mayor. It's funny, clever, and manages to find humor in the chaos of modern politics. With the show's talented cast and smart writing, it's sure to be another great season.
