In "You Go to My Head," the seventh episode of Mozart in the Jungle's first season, the New York Symphony is in hot water. Hailey's (Lola Kirke) friend, Lizzie (Hannah Dunne), is in town and they both decide to help support the Symphony by selling orchestra merchandise. At the same time, a news story is released with criticism of the Symphony and its new board member, the wealthy socialite and philanthropist, Lennox (Gretchen Mol).
As the Symphony struggles to maintain its funding, Thomas (Malcolm McDowell) pushes forward with his plan to rebrand the Symphony's image with a new marketing campaign. His ideas are met with resistance from Gloria (Bernadette Peters), who argues that they should focus their efforts on improving the quality of the orchestra instead of marketing.
Meanwhile, Rodrigo (Gael Garcia Bernal) is dealing with his own problems. Haunted by memories of his mentor, he seeks solace in alcohol and drugs, causing him to miss rehearsals and even performances. Hailey attempts to step in and help her maestro get back on track, but it proves to be a difficult task.
At the same time, Cynthia (Saffron Burrows) faces her own personal challenges. Struggling with a recent breakup and the pressure of fundraising for the Symphony, she turns to Rodrigo for comfort. Their relationship takes a complicated turn, leaving both of them questioning how to move forward.
In "You Go to My Head," tensions rise and the characters are forced to confront their own personal struggles while navigating the challenges of keeping the Symphony afloat. As the season nears its end, the fate of the New York Symphony hangs in the balance.
