Moyashimon follows Tadayasu Sawaki, a freshman at an agricultural university who has the unique ability to see and communicate with microbes. In season 1 episode 4, Everywhere is Microbe Party, Tadayasu and his classmates take a trip to a nearby hot springs resort as part of their school's cultural exchange program.
Upon arrival, the group is met by the resort’s owner who is concerned about a potential mold problem in the hot springs. Tadayasu offers to take a sample of the water and examine it back at the university to see if there is indeed a mold issue.
While the rest of the group enjoys the hot springs, Tadayasu visits the kitchen where he observes various microbes aiding in the fermentation of miso and soy sauce. He is particularly fascinated by a fungus that has been growing on a piece of fruit, and low and behold, he discovers that the fungus is the same species as the one that the resort owner was concerned about in the hot springs.
Tadayasu rushes back to the others to tell them the news, and they immediately form a plan to eradicate the mold. They gather various microbes found in the soil and use them to create a natural disinfectant to eliminate the mold in the hot springs.
As they work, the group is joined by a microbiology professor from a nearby university who is impressed by Tadayasu's ability to communicate with microbes. She explains that microbial research can be used to solve a wide range of problems, from food production to environmental issues.
The episode ends with Tadayasu and his classmates presenting their findings to the resort owner, who is thrilled that they were able to solve the mold problem and offers to show the group more of the resort’s microbial systems.
Everywhere is Microbe Party provides a great deal of insight into the world of microbes and their importance to agriculture and food production. The episode also highlights the potential for microbial research to solve various environmental problems such as water contamination. Overall, it’s an entertaining and educational episode that perfectly captures the essence of Moyashimon.
