In season 9 episode 7 of Mountain Men titled "Carnage," we follow the daily lives of several mountain men as they continue to survive in the harsh wilderness of America. The episode starts with Marty Meierotto, who is busy preparing for winter. He needs to clear snow from his trapline, store enough firewood for the cold season, and hunt enough food to last him and his family through the winter months.
Meanwhile, in Montana, Tom Oar is on the move. He had enough of the low country last year and is scouting out new land. Tom and his wife Nancy hit the road to find a new homestead. They meet with a landowner who wants to sell them a piece of secluded land deep in the mountains. But before they commit, they need to figure out if the area will provide them with enough resources to survive.
Eustace Conway, another Mountain Man, is also having a busy day. He received a call from a friend who needs help pulling out dead trees from his field. The trees are extremely heavy and sizeable, so Eustace has to use his team of horses to get the job done. It's hard work, but Eustace is a master at using his horses, and the landowner is grateful for his help.
Next up is Kyle Bell. The episode follows him as he trains his new oxen team. Kyle has a few select oxen that he uses to pull his sled, but he needs to teach them how to work correctly. He also talks about his past experience with horses and how he transitioned to using oxen. Finally, he tests his oxen out by taking them on a trial ride to see how they perform.
The episode also takes a look at Rich Lewis, who has been dealing with pesky predators all season. He's had to deal with foxes causing problems with his chickens and coyotes killing his cattle. Rich is determined to find the culprits and has set up several traps around his farm. Finally, he catches a coyote that has been causing havoc around his property.
Last but not least, we have Josh Kirk. In this episode, he is facing a real crisis as his valuable caribou hides have been ruined by bugs. The hides are not just for personal use, but he plans to sell them to make a living. He tries a few different remedies to save the hides, but it seems like his efforts are in vain.
As the episode progresses, we see how each mountain man handles the challenges they face as they live off the land. From dealing with pesky predators to preserving valuable hides, they do whatever it takes to survive in the wilderness. The episode does an excellent job of highlighting the unique lifestyles of each mountain man and showcasing the skills they've honed to survive.
