In the season 4 finale of Mountain Men, titled "Winter's Gamble," the stakes are higher than ever as winter is in full swing.
Marty Meierotto, living deep in the Alaskan wilderness, is preparing for the toughest part of the season. As temperatures drop to 40 below zero, he must ensure his dog sled team is in top condition for the long haul ahead. To make matters worse, an unexpected predator threatens his ability to hunt for food.
Eustace Conway, master woodsman and owner of Turtle Island, is in need of assistance. After losing a bet, he has to build a bridge across a creek before the end of winter. With limited supplies and manpower, he must rely on his ingenuity to get the job done in time.
Tom Oar, the oldest Mountain Man at 73 years old, is also facing his share of challenges. His horse, Scout, has come down with an illness, and time is of the essence to save him. As he works to nurse Scout back to health, he also must keep up with his trapping responsibilities.
Finally, the youngest Mountain Man, Jason Hawk, faces a major setback. He and his wife, Mary, were in the process of building a trading post when a storm destroyed their progress. With the clock ticking and limited resources, they must decide whether to rebuild or abandon the project altogether.
In the midst of these challenges, the Mountain Men show viewers the grit and determination it takes to survive in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. From the fight for food and shelter to the struggle to keep animals alive in frigid temperatures, these men demonstrate what it truly means to be a Mountain Man.
