Mountain Goats is a television series which follows the lives of the hard-working animals and their human shepherds, in the stunningly beautiful Lake District of England. The show, which premiered on BBC1 in 2015, brings to life the daily challenges and joys of traditional shepherding and was narrated by actor, Martin Clunes.
The series is divided into six episodes which are filmed in stunning locations across the Lake District. The first episode introduces us to the shepherds, their dogs, and their flocks, as they prepare for the annual Great Shepherd's Show in Keswick. The show is a highlight of the shepherds’ year and provides the ultimate chance to show off their skills and the beauty of their flocks to the public.
Each episode focuses on a different aspect of the work and challenges faced by the shepherds. For example; we observe the skill required to navigate the rugged terrain of the mountains, the lives of the newborn lambs, the unique bond between shepherds and their dogs, and the impact that the changing seasons have on the workload for the shepherds.
One of the fascinating aspects of the show is the learning journey the viewer goes on as we watch the shepherds train their dogs. The highly trained Border Collies are crucial to the job and are responsible for rounding up the flocks. Their incredible agility and intelligence are showcased in every episode, as they work tirelessly alongside their human counterparts, making their job much easier and safer.
Throughout the show, we are introduced to the people behind the job and their connection to the land. We get to know the seasoned shepherds, who have spent their whole lives caring for their flocks, as well as the younger ones who are keen to follow in their footsteps. We also hear from people like James Rebanks, a farmer, writer, and shepherd, who shares his love and knowledge of the landscape and how it shapes the lives of the characters in the show.
The stunning scenery of the Lake District is also an integral part of the series. The drone footage captures the beauty of the mountains and the deep valleys, giving the viewer a sense of what it’s like to live in this impressive landscape. The series is filmed over the course of the year, so we get to see the changing seasons and how they impact the lives of the people in the region.
