In the ninth episode of Most Haunted's first season, the team travels to Culzean Castle, which sits atop a dramatic cliff overlooking the Ayrshire coast in Scotland. The castle has a rich and varied history, having been built in the late 18th century by the renowned architect Robert Adam for the Kennedy family, who owned the land on which it stands for hundreds of years. The castle was eventually given to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945, and it is open to visitors throughout the year.
As the Most Haunted team explores the castle, they are struck by its beauty and grandeur, but they soon discover that it is also home to a multitude of ghostly presences. Some of the most famous sightings at Culzean Castle include the ghost of a piper who disappeared without a trace, a ghostly gamekeeper who has been seen wandering the grounds, and the ghosts of several sailors who perished in a shipwreck off the coast.
The team begins their investigation in the castle's spectacular Oval Staircase, which was designed by Robert Adam as a grand entrance to the upper floors of the building. Yvette Fielding and her team use a variety of equipment to try and capture any paranormal activity, including thermal imaging cameras, electromagnetic field detectors, and voice recorders. They experience several strange occurrences, including unexplained noises and the feeling of being watched, but it is not until they move on to the castle's Armoury Room that they encounter some truly chilling phenomena.
The Armoury Room is said to be haunted by the ghost of a groom who was killed in a riding accident on the castle grounds. The team sets up their equipment and begins their investigation, and they are soon startled by the sound of a loud bang coming from somewhere in the room. They investigate further, and discover that one of the weapons on display in the Armoury Room has been moved from its place. They cannot explain how it happened, and are left wondering if it was the work of a mischievous spirit.
Next, the team moves on to the castle's most famous feature - the Ailsa Suite, which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who fell to her death from one of the suite's windows. The team sets up their equipment in the spacious drawing room, and begin their investigation. They hear strange noises coming from the adjacent bedroom, and are convinced that they have captured the sound of a woman's voice on their recording equipment.
As the investigation draws to a close, the team reflects on their experiences at Culzean Castle. They have encountered a multitude of unexplained phenomena, and are left wondering if the castle's ghosts will ever be at peace. Most Haunted fans will be captivated by this atmospheric and chilling episode, which perfectly captures the eerie beauty of one of Scotland's most haunted castles.
