Ep 5. The Next Murder You Hear

Maddie and David are back solving mysteries and fighting for their clients in the fifth episode of Moonlighting's first season. This time around, they are hired to investigate a series of murders that are occurring in a violent TV show. The show isn't even airing yet, so the murders are perplexing indeed.

The two detectives are in charge of providing security for the show's star, Carla, and for investigating a murder that happens in the production. David ends up taking the role of the murder's victim, and Maddie infiltrates the show as an extra. What seems like a straightforward investigation quickly turns complex as several other murders take place. Each time David is the one who is killed off, and Maddie is the one left to solve the murder.

Maddie, who's trying to make sense of the murders, begins to suspect there's a rogue element to the cast and crew of the show. Meanwhile, David, who appears to be flourishing in his role as a star, is basking in the attention of his new flame, Carla.

Things turn even uglier after the show's executive producer is also murdered, forcing Maddie to team up with the show's director, James, to help uncover the killer. A curious and ambitious detective, who ends up being more of a hindrance than help, seems to be underfoot almost every time a new murder takes place.

The killer proves to be elusive and cunning, always managing to make his way in and out of the set undetected. Even when the killer is finally caught, the biggest twist of the episode reveals itself, shocking Maddie and David and leaving them wondering who the real culprit is.

Overall, The Next Murder You Hear features some classic Moonlighting humor and sparkling character interactions, particularly between Maddie and David. The episode keeps you guessing all the way until the end, with its complex plot twists and mysterious murders. The acting abilities of the main cast is worth mentioning, with Cybill Shepherd's impressive character portrayal making the audience root for her. Bruce Willis is nothing short of exceptional as the episode’s leading man, and he brings a refreshing levity to an otherwise dark and brooding script.
