In season 3, episode 21 of Monsterquest titled "Terror From the Sky," the show explores reports of mysterious flying creatures around the world. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen massive birds, pterosaurs, and other winged beasts with wingspans ranging from 10 to 30 feet. These beings are said to be able to pluck prey from the ground and even pick up humans.
The episode kicks off with reports of sightings in Texas, where witnesses claim to have seen a massive bird with wings taller than an average human. A local rancher shares his experience of seeing a creature that he describes as a "prehistoric bird." He explains how the bird circled his ranch before finally flying away. Subsequent interviews with other witnesses reveal similar sightings, with people describing the creature as a giant bird or a pterodactyl.
The show then switches its focus to South America, where similar sightings have occurred throughout the years. Locals believe these creatures could be descendants of dinosaurs that managed to survive extinction. One interviewee claims to have seen a creature with a wingspan of over 20 feet. Another witness shares his experience of seeing a creature with a head similar to that of a deer but with wings and a long tail.
Monsterquest then travels to Papua New Guinea, where locals have long shared stories of giant flying creatures known as Ropen. These creatures are said to have bat-like wings and a pointed beak, and their wingspans can reach up to 30 feet. The show travels to the island of Umboi, where several sightings have been reported. Interviews reveal that the Ropen is said to emit a bright light while flying, leading some to believe that it is bioluminescent. Monsterquest sets up cameras and microphones throughout the island to try and capture evidence of the Ropen's existence.
The final segment of the episode takes place in the United States, where witnesses have seen a strange creature resembling a giant bat. The creature is said to be able to fly at incredible speeds and is often seen at night. Monsterquest sets up cameras in a rural area where sightings have been reported. While they fail to capture any footage of the creature, they do find evidence that something has been moving through the area.
Throughout the episode, Monsterquest interviews witnesses and experts in an attempt to shed light on these mysterious flying creatures. The show examines physical evidence and attempts to debunk some sightings as hoaxes or misidentifications. However, there are a few cases where the evidence remains unexplained, leaving the viewer to ponder the possibility that undiscovered creatures could be flying in our skies.
