Bonnie and Tammy attend a dance-based exercise class, but Bonnie's competitiveness gets in the way, and Christy decides to intervene. Meanwhile, Tammy's grandmother, Grandma Jean, visits the apartment for the first time since Tammy’s relationship with Bonnie started. Christy and the others are apprehensive about how she'll react to their unconventional living arrangements. But much to their surprise, she adapts easily and seems rather fond of Bonnie. While Tammy is grateful for the support, Bonnie is taken aback when Grandma Jean suggests she meet Tammy's wealthy father.
As for Bonnie and Tammy's dance class, things start off somewhat rocky as Bonnie is hyper-competitive and almost injures one of the other class participants. Tammy becomes increasingly frustrated with Bonnie, as she tries to compete with everyone in the class and keep time with the routine. Christy's attempts to smooth things over don't work, and Bonnie ends up storming out of the class. Tammy eventually catches up with her, but the incident causes a rift between the two and leads them to question the future of their relationship.
Elsewhere, Jill faces issues when her troubled foster daughter, Emily, has a difficult time adjusting to her new school. Emily's acting out behavior puts Jill in an awkward position when the school guidance counselor calls her into the office to discuss Emily's behavior. Jill turns to Bonnie for advice on how to handle the situation, and Bonnie insists she takes a harder line with Emily. However, Jill knows things are more complex, and the issues stem from Emily's poor upbringing.
As the episode progresses, Tammy and Bonnie find their way back to each other, and Emily's situation starts to improve with the help of Jill's patience and understanding. Christy's mother, Bonnie, is the star of the episode, displaying vulnerability, humor, and wisdom in her interactions with the regular characters and her new mother-in-law. Overall, "Flamingos and a Dance-Based Exercise Class" is an engaging and heartwarming episode that highlights the power of love and friendship.
