Christy (Anna Faris) is taking a much-needed study break from law school, but as usual, drama rears its head in her personal life. When Bonnie (Allison Janney) drops by with Christy's old childhood poodle-shaped hairbrush, she discovers her ex-boyfriend from last season, Adam (William Fichtner), has moved into the building directly next door.
Christy is taken aback by this news. She's still feeling raw about their breakup and is even more surprised when Bonnie admits she ran into him while on a date. Bonnie also drops another bombshell: she's been having twinges of jealousy about her husband Adam's handsome client, who is played by guest star Colin Hanks. Bonnie is mortified about her own insecurity and downplays it, but both she and Christy soon find themselves shutting out their significant others and lamenting their respective single statuses.
The episode digs further into Adam and Christy's past and current relationship, and as the two of them get to know each other again, Christy doesn't know if she's emotionally ready to handle the mixed signals. Meanwhile, Bonnie gives Adam some unsolicited advice on his career, causing him to feel emasculated and frustrated.
Mother-daughter bonding and female friendship are the hallmarks of "Mom" and this episode is no exception, as the two leads try to help each other navigate the ups and downs of relationships. Once again, "Mom" balances its dramatic and comedic elements with ease.
