Christy has always been one to help others in need and in this episode, she takes on the role of caregiver for injured Bonnie who hurt her eye while making love with Adam. She found herself feeling overwhelmed with all the domestic work and had to momentarily give that up for the sake of her injury. Their group of friends come over to help with the chores, which draws parallelism to the theme of the episode of being able to say no and seek help when needed. Both Bonnie and Christy recognize the need to accept help when they are not able to carry the load.
Meanwhile, the theme of technology and its evolving integration into our lives take center stage in this episode. Christy attended a fundraiser where her boring job landed her an opportunity to engage more with other guests by testing a virtual reality headset. She becomes enamored with the technology, but a tussle over the headset with a fellow user leads to an unexpected outcome. On the other hand, Bonnie is struggling to adapt to the ever-changing technology world as her inability to use a set top box to view her favorite television program creates a problem with the rest of her social group.
The episode is filled with relatable humor through the storyline of elder Vernon played by David Hunt who is filled with anxiety at the idea of having to operate a new communication remote that his daughter got him. Meanwhile, the subplot of Bob, played by Chris Mari and Emily Osment’s character, Jodi, takes a positive turn as Bob has developed a connection with a fellow Alexaverse employee who shares his passion for fighting robots.
The show is consistent with its theme of dysfunction, forgiveness, redemption, and friendship as Christy, Bonnie and their support system navigate through the different challenges posed to them.
The writers of this episode delved into relatable issues that viewers of all ages could appreciate. The dialogue and humor is filled with nuances that make it so unique and real. Every character gets their time in the spotlight, allowing for a multitude of storylines to drive the episode forward.
Overall, viewers will enjoy the show's lighthearted take on the often-complex issues faced by its characters, and the creative ways in which they manage to solve them. The plot is engaging, and the writing is impeccable in its ability to weave multiple narratives into a cohesive story. The ninth season episode Ocular Fluid and Fighting Robots does a great job of exemplifying the essence of the show's winning formula.
