The Big Game is the ninth episode of the fifth season of the popular family sitcom, Modern Family. The episode begins with Phil Dunphy (played by Ty Burrell) getting excited for the big football game between the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers. As a big fan of the Broncos, he prepares for the game by decorating his house with Broncos memorabilia and buying all the necessary game day snacks.
Meanwhile, his wife Claire (played by Julie Bowen) is determined to teach their daughter Alex (played by Ariel Winter) a lesson about responsibility, after she had borrowed her car without permission. Claire puts Alex in charge of making sure everything is in order for their big game day party, including preparing food, setting up the TV, and making sure everyone has a good time.
But Alex quickly becomes overwhelmed with the responsibility and turns to her sister Haley (played by Sarah Hyland) for help. The two of them work together to make the party a success, but not without a few mishaps along the way.
At the same time, Jay Pritchett (played by Ed O'Neill) and his wife Gloria (played by Sofia Vergara) are attempting to impress their new neighbors by inviting them over for the big game. But things quickly go awry when Gloria's ex-husband Javier (played by Benjamin Bratt) shows up unexpectedly and starts causing trouble.
Simultaneously, Cam Tucker (played by Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell Pritchett (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson) are trying to enjoy the game despite being in the middle of their own personal battle. Cam wants to adopt another baby, but Mitchell is still hesitant after their last adoption didn't go as planned. The two of them spend most of the episode bickering and trying to reconcile their differences.
As the game progresses, the different storylines converge, and the characters are forced to confront the challenges they've been facing. But as always, they manage to come together and enjoy each other's company despite their differences.
The Big Game is a classic episode of Modern Family, showcasing the show's signature blend of heart and humor. With its relatable plotlines, endearing characters, and clever writing, it's no wonder why the show remains a fan favorite even years after its original airing.
