In the third episode of Modern Family's fourth season, entitled "Snip," our beloved families are faced with some pretty big – and permanent – decisions. All three storylines in the episode are centered around the theme of change and the struggle to accept it.
First up, we have Phil and Claire trying to come to terms with the fact that their youngest son Luke is growing up faster than they could have ever anticipated. After learning that Luke has entered puberty and is starting to grow facial hair, Phil is feeling a little lost and out of touch with his son. Claire, on the other hand, is determined to bond with Luke by taking him out on a shopping trip for new clothes.
Meanwhile, Jay is also facing a big change – his wife Gloria is pregnant with their second child. Although he is excited to be a father again, he is also feeling a little overwhelmed by the thought of starting all over again with a newborn. He and Manny decide to take a trip to the pet store to buy a puppy, hoping that it will help Jay ease into the idea of caring for a newborn.
Lastly, we have Cam and Mitch dealing with the aftermath of Cam's decision to get a vasectomy without discussing it with Mitch beforehand. While Cam is confident that he made the right decision for their family, Mitch is feeling hurt and betrayed that Cam didn't consider his feelings before undergoing the procedure.
Throughout the episode, we see each family struggling to accept the changes happening in their lives. Phil and Claire eventually come to terms with the fact that Luke is no longer a child, and that it's okay for him to grow up and become his own person. Jay realizes that he can handle being a father again, and is able to bond with his new puppy in the process. And Cam and Mitch ultimately come to an understanding about the vasectomy, with Cam realizing that he should have discussed it with Mitch beforehand.
As always, the episode is filled with plenty of laughs and heartwarming moments, and it's a great example of why Modern Family continues to be one of the most beloved sitcoms on television. Whether you're a long-time fan of the show or just tuning in for the first time, "Snip" is an episode that is sure to entertain and leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
