When it comes to career day at Luke's school, the Dunphy trio goes all in. Phil will be presenting his magic act, which he performed in college, Claire plans to talk about her role as a CEO at Pritchett's Closets, and Luke has decided he wants to become a magic teacher. Meanwhile, Mitchell and Jay are both scheduled to present at the high school, and they're both struggling to come up with a presentation that captures the attention of bored teenagers.
For Mitchell, it's a matter of actually having a job to talk about. He's currently between gigs, and he's not sure what to say. Meanwhile, Jay is relegated to speaking about his career in the closet business, which he feels is boring and unexciting.
Things get even more complicated when Gloria shows up at the high school with Joe in tow, and she's determined to take advantage of her impromptu visit to show off her baby to everyone she meets. This puts a wrench in Jay's plans, as he's worried he won't have enough time to meet with all the students before his presentation.
Back at Luke's school, Claire is stressing out about her role as a CEO, and she's convinced that the other parents won't take her seriously. When she arrives at the school, she's surprised to see just how interested the kids are in hearing about her job, and she quickly becomes the center of attention. Meanwhile, Phil is having his own issues with his magic act, which isn't going as smoothly as he'd hoped.
As the day goes on, both Mitchell and Jay find themselves struggling to connect with the students, with Mitchell's lack of a job putting him at a disadvantage, and Jay's presentation failing to capture anyone's interest. It's only when Gloria steps in to help that things start to turn around for them.
Meanwhile, at Luke's school, things get even crazier as Phil's magic act takes a turn for the worse, and Luke discovers that teaching magic isn't as easy as he thought it would be. In the end, though, everyone manages to pull together and make a success of career day, with some unexpected help from each other.
This episode of Modern Family tackles the theme of careers and how we present ourselves to others, especially when it comes to our children. Parents want to be seen as successful and important, but sometimes we're our own biggest critics. The episode also touches on the idea of finding your passion and pursuing it, even if it's something a little unconventional. In the end, it's the support and encouragement of those around us that helps us make it through the tough times.
