In Modern Family season 3 episode 12, entitled "Egg Drop," the Dunphy and Pritchett families participate in a school project in which they have to create devices that can keep an egg from breaking when dropped from a certain height.
Phil and Claire team up with Luke to build their device, but Luke is more interested in impressing a girl than actually winning the competition. Meanwhile, Cam and Mitchell argue over the best way to approach the project, with Cam wanting to let Lily do most of the work and Mitchell wanting to actually help her learn something.
Gloria and Jay struggle to work together on the project, but things take a turn when Gloria introduces a secret ingredient to their device that could give them an edge in the competition.
As the families work on their devices, they also deal with personal issues. Claire is frustrated with Phil's lack of communication, Manny struggles to write a love letter, and Haley and Alex argue over a boy.
On the day of the competition, tensions run high as everyone anxiously waits to see if their egg will survive the drop. The families come up with creative and hilarious solutions, including using a wig, a piñata, and a hamster ball.
In the end, the families learn valuable lessons about teamwork and communication, and the competition results in surprising outcomes for the whole family.
